Staines-upon-Thames, UK, 23 April 2013: Yospace technology underpins a new software product from Australian online video specialist 3ivx. The 3ivx HLS Adapter allows an HLS streaming file to be read and displayed by computers, tablets and smartphones running Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. This allows content owners to serve this growing market by re-using the workflows they have in place for iOS devices.

The HLS (HTTP live streaming) format, developed by Apple for iOS applications, has become the de facto standard in adaptive bitrate streaming, and is also used to deliver content to Android, Blackberry 10, Roku, Boxee and Samsung devices including connected televisions. For this reason, many content owners have developed workflows that output HLS, and are reluctant to add a second preparation platform to support Windows 8.What the 3ivx SDK, now bundled with the yospaceCDS content distribution platform, provides is the ability for Windows 8 to interpret the HLS stream transparently, including the adaptive bitrate control, and provide seamless playback. To use the SDK, the application developer simply adds one line of code to their Windows 8 apps. The SDK supports live streaming as well as video on demand.“This really is a no-brainer for content owners,” said David Springall, CTO and founder of Yospace. “It is a high performance solution, so Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices see the same quality of experience as those which support HLS natively. It can be implemented for a fraction of the cost of a complete new distribution workflow, and because one file type serves all consumers, content owners save on CDN charges and the costs of caching.“This is a real win-win,” added Stuart Espey, technical director of 3ivx Technologies. “Windows 8 is sure to have a major impact in the world of personal computing, and our partnership with Yospace enables us to provide video content services the world over with a simple solution to deliver their content.” - Ends -About YospaceFounded in 1999, Yospace is a veteran of the mobile & multimedia industry.
